Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unity in the City?

The vision of this spiritual community arose over the last several years. Sensing a need for a new kind of church in the Boston area, a core group began to lay the groundwork for a start-up Unity congregation. Unity Center of Cambridge first launched services in May 2005.  We changed our name to  Unity in the City and have moved to a new location in Brookline at the The Pierce School at 50 School St., Brookline, MA. Today we are a church that:

  • Emphasizes practical spiritual principles over theory and doctrine
  • Honors the wisdom in all spiritual traditions
  • Feels contemporary, fresh and relevant
  • Serves growing families and individuals in the surrounding communities of eastern Massachusetts
  • We are committed to bringing a fresh, engaging approach to spirituality to people of all ages in the Boston area. We've found we connect especially well with people who identify as more spiritual than religious; and perhaps haven't been part of a church community in the past. Like many college towns, Boston attracts a lot of people with progressive values and holistic belief systems; people who are interested in meditation and attend yoga classes, but don't have a place to go on Sunday morning.;

    Unity in the City is committed to changing that. Through skilled and inclusive ministry that meets the needs of individuals and families in all life stages, UITC is building an innovative new spiritual home - especially for people who haven't found one yet.

    Where does Unity in the City meet?

    We are leasing new space for our growing needs in Brighton at: The Pierce School, 50 School St., Brookline, MA 02445. More information is available on our Worship Services page.

    What is Unity? Is it the same as Unitarian?

    This is a common question asked of Unity. The answer to this and many more questions can be found at the Unity FAQ section of the main Unity website.

    What are the principles behind Unity?

    Unity believes in 5 basic principles:
      Principle #1:   God is absolute good, everywhere present.
      Principle #2:  Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore, they are also inherently good.
      Principle #3:  Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking.  Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
      Principle #4:  Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity and everything good.
      Principle #5:  Knowing and understanding the Laws of Life, also called Truth, are not enough. A person must also live the truth that he or she knows.
