Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unity in the City?

The vision of this spiritual community arose over the last several years. Sensing a need for a new kind of church in the Boston area, a core group began to lay the groundwork for a start-up Unity congregation. Unity Center of Cambridge first launched services in May 2005 and moved in April 2010 to Brighton under the new name of Unity in the City. Today we are a church that:

  • Emphasizes practical spiritual principles over theory and doctrine
  • Honors the wisdom in all spiritual traditions
  • Feels contemporary, fresh and relevant
  • Serves growing families and individuals in the surrounding communities of eastern Massachusetts
  • We are committed to bringing a fresh, engaging approach to spirituality to people of all ages in the Boston area. We've found we connect especially well with people who identify as "more spiritual than religious" and perhaps haven't been part of a church community in the past. Like many college towns, Boston attracts a lot of people with progressive values and holistic belief systems – people who are interested in meditation and attend yoga classes, but don't have "a place to go on Sunday morning."

Unity in the City is committed to changing that. Through skilled and inclusive ministry that meets the needs of individuals and families in all life stages, UITC is building an innovative new spiritual home - especially for people who haven't found one yet.

Where does Unity in the City meet?

We are leasing new space for our growing needs in Brighton at: 320 Washington St, 3rd floor, Brighton, MA 02135. More information is available on our Worship Services page.

What is Unity? Is it the same as Unitarian?

This is a common question asked of Unity. The answer to this and many more questions can be found at the Unity FAQ section of the main Unity website.

What are the principles behind Unity?

Unity believes in 5 basic principles:
    • God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.
    • We are spiritual beings, created in God's image. The spirit of God lives in every person; therefore all people are inherently good.
    • We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
    • There is power in meditation and affirmative prayer, which we believe strengthen our awareness of God.
    • Knowledge of spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.
